See what she had to say about her experience at The College of New Jersey: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or rural is the campus? Did you feel safe on campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Erica: Part of the reason I chose to go to The College of New Jersey was because of its smaller, closed campus. It takes about 15 minutes to walk from one side of campus to the other, so while some students do use bikes, it is largely a walking campus. For students who live off campus in the residential houses of Ewing, NJ, cars may be necessary. Most people do not move off campus until their junior or senior years, though. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Erica:Because of the small campus community, most classes have between 15-25 students, which makes it far easier for professors to be available after class and for office hours. All professors and advisers are also incredibly willing to meet with students about anything at all. A great part of The College of New Jersey is that students are not eligible to register for classes until they have met with their academic adviser, so it is a requirement for both the student and the adviser to meet at least once per semester. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Erica:All students are guaranteed housing for their freshman and sophomore years at The College of New Jersey, which takes off a lot of pressure. Most freshmen are placed in what are known as The Towers. The first week before school starts, The College of New Jersey has a welcome week where students spend all of their time getting to know the people on their floors and building camaraderie through different silly games, activities, and floor meetings. This is incredibly helpful in breaking the ice, and makes everyone much more comfortable with one another throughout the year. In terms of dining, the main dining hall, Eickhoff, has a ton of options. There is also the Library Caf, Education Caf, and multiple options for salads, sandwiches, and sushi in the Student Center. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Erica:The College of New Jersey is known for its education department, but other majors are definitely getting to be better represented on campus. In addition to the education programs, The College of New Jersey has wonderful programs in business, engineering, biology, and various other areas of study. I personally got my Master of Arts in Teaching in urban education and my bachelors degree in elementary education and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). The College of New Jersey did a great job in supporting me in both my undergraduate and graduate careers. STEM is a growing field at The College of New Jersey, as well. There is even a whole STEM building in the process of being built! VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Erica:As I mentioned before, welcome week works wonders for meeting people. Clearly it can be strange and awkward moving onto a floor with 50 other people, but The College of New Jersey clears the air immediately by providing tons of group activities both with your floor and with your building as a whole. There is a lot of floor and tower pride by the end of the year, even by the end of welcome week! While Greek life does have a strong presence on campus, it is definitely not necessary to become part of it. There are countless club sports (which I was a part of), educational groups, and various other groups (Manhunt club, Circus club, Quidditch team). There is certainly a place for everyone on The College of New Jerseys campus! VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Erica:The Career Center and the Tutoring Center are both extremely helpful. The Tutoring Center employs students to tutor other students who are struggling in certain aspects of their courses. There are tutors for childrens literature courses all the way to advanced calculus, biology, and languages. The advisers at the Career Center are always ready and willing to help give students a direction or just to hear out their ideas about the future. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Erica:The College of New Jerseys library has won awards! It is four stories high with an auditorium and media center in the basement. There are many different sections based on your studying needs and habits. The caf is on the first floor, where you can grab a coffee or sandwich and discuss projects with friends as though you are at a Starbucks. There are also loads of computers available to use and print from. There are many quiet study rooms for small groups and individual work stations. The library tends to get quieter as you go up, so by the time you reach the fourth floor, you could hear a pin drop! VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Erica:The College of New Jersey is located in Ewing, NJ, which is a residential town. Because of this, there is not quite the lively downtown area that many campuses have, but The College of New Jersey is addressing this! A brand new Campus Town is under construction and will be ready for the 2015-2016 school year. Campus Town, which is placed directly on the outskirts of campus, is going to include a Barnes Noble, Panera, a pizzeria, a sushi restaurant, a pub, and tons of living space! Outside of Campus Town, there are a ton of establishments that students have found, such as Piccolos Pizzeria, which is a five-minute drive from campus; a bowling alley a few blocks away; and a discoteca/restaurant that is a 10-minute drive from campus! VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Erica:With a student body of less than 8,000 students, it is understandable that class sizes never reached more than 35-40 students at the most. Classes are really only that large during freshman year courses. After this, most classes have between 15-25 students, and many have even less than that. I loved that the class sizes were so small. It makes it much easier to build a relationship with professors, ask questions, and get to know your classmates. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Erica:I participated in the Philadelphia Urban Seminar, which was a two-week Maymester class at the end of the Spring semester. Twelve other The College of New Jersey students and I moved into the dorms at LaSalle University, in addition to students from 10 other schools in Pennsylvania, Norway, and Finland. We spent two weeks in a classroom, helping students, assisting the cooperating teacher, and even teaching lessons. After school we would spend time debriefing on our day, and by the end of the trip my group had become like a family. If you are a newly minted graduate, you can fold these into your ongoing planning from day 1. Tactics to manage your career: 1. Have a Goal in Mind Even if you change your mind, continually be aiming at some specific career goal. It could be a promotion, advancement or an assignment to be pursued. Having a goal in mind helps shape your other actions. Without a goal, there’s no telling where you will end up. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) 2. Get Knowledgeable About the Criteria for Attaining Your Goal Questions you should be continuously asking are: What does it take to be promoted to the next level? To receive advancement? To be assigned to a juicy project? This is like climbing a mountain; you first need to decide which mountain. Once you do that, you can figure out the best way to get to your destination and what you need to support the climb. 3. Analyze Your Shortages With your goal in mind, you need to turn your attention to what you need to equip yourself with in order to be qualified to attain your goal. There may be a skill you need to develop or level up, and if that is true, how will you accomplish it? You may need to enroll in a class or seek someone out to train you. It’s safe to say that with all goals, there is action and knowledge required to get there. 4. Get Insight You would do well to speak to the people who have accomplished what you want to do. These people can provide you with great insight and information about the nature of the work and what they had to do to achieve what they did. While your path may be somewhat different, this type of information can prove invaluable, especially if there is some political work needed. Political turf is not always plain to see, and it’s good to get the “lay of the land”. 5. Create Accountability One thing about our own personal goals is that there’s no one but ourselves to push us and hold us accountable for taking the steps to achieve our goals. There are various things you can do to help you stay true to your commitment, starting with putting dates on your actions or steps. You can also involve someone in your plan, such as your boss, mentor or coach. If you ask someone to keep you accountable and ask you about your progress, it will help create a positive “tension” to keep you on task. 6. Prepare to Update Your Plan I once heard a saying, “A plan cannot withstand a collision with reality.” That means things happen that will cause your plan to stray off of its path. This is natural, but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a plan. It simply means you need to continually update your plan as various circumstances present setbacks or opportunities. It’s good for you to refresh your plan at least every 6 months, or whenever some significant changes affect either your direction or actions. The management of your career is your responsibility; and you have to know that it may or may not go anywhere without your guidance. The Under-appreciated Power of Paying Attention Part 1 Improving Academic Performance When a student is really struggling in school or on standardized tests, reversing the trend can seem like a truly daunting task. One of the first things a parent might say to student who comes home with a “C” or “D” on a report card might be, “are you paying attention in class?” This is indeed a very important question, because paying attention in class is critical to performing well in school. Paying attention while taking a standardized test is also critical, yet oddly it probably seems so obvious that you may have never actually thought about the fact that it’s important. In this article, we’ll discuss a seemingly obvious concept in a new light: paying attention. The idea that “paying attention” is important seems simple, but it actually operates on a variety of different levels. In this article, we’ll address the following three questions: What does it really mean to focus on paying attention? What are the different dimensions of “paying attention” that a student or parent should be thinking about? Why is paying attention so important? What are some strategies for improving your ability to pay attention (follow up post) 1. What does it mean to pay attention? Let’s start by thinking about your typical high school or college student sitting in class. I’d submit that there are three level of paying attention to consider: Just listening to the teacher vs. staring out the window or day dreaming about something else Actively listening to the teacher, and focusing on when she explicitly calls things important, not important, assigns things, asks questions, and perhaps most important, when you do vs. don’t understand what is being said Fully engaged listening to the teacher, in which you are really trying to understand and digest what she’s saying (which I recognize is not easy if you aren’t also very interested in what is being discussed) to challenge and enhance your understanding of it You might call (A) the bare minimum and (C) the gold standard of paying attention. (A) is fundamentally about being committed to being a part of the situation at a high level. The first step in this direction is, of course, attending vs. skipping class altogether. But, once you’re there, you really have to focus on listening to what’s going on. If you are day dreaming, it’s almost as if you aren’t there at all. The next step is actively listening, where you focus on identifying when something important has been said. Finally, in C), when you are fully engaged in the lecture, you will naturally ask a question when you don’t understand or want to make a point. As you move from A through B and toward C, you are essentially realizing that listening to words being said out loud is only the first step in understanding an idea. When you are really paying attention, you are constantly breaking down explanations and ideas, re-phrasing them, creating linkages to other ideas you understand to be true, and making sure you understand. 2. Why is paying attention so important? Many students think that reading and homework assignments are substitutes for attending or really paying attention in class. But, they are wrong. When it comes to a typical academic subject, the more obvious reason that paying attention is so important is that classes are typically structured such that you learn things in class, they are reinforced in assigned readings, applied through homework and projects, and your knowledge is then evaluated through quizzes and tests. However, it’s a little messier than that. Many of us have probably found that, when explained in layman’s terms by a teacher, a given concept or idea is much more digestible than when described in a text book. In other cases, something might be covered in class that actually isn’t covered in a text book at all. So, you can’t skip class, or sleep through it, and think that you’re going to be well positioned to do well in the class. You will literally be missing information that you need to have. The more subtle reason that paying attention is so important is that our brains and minds don’t just learn things upon hearing or reading them. They learn through the struggle of trying to understand what is being said. The process of trying to digest what is being said in real time, ask questions if necessary, and synthesize information together to form our own opinions and perspective. If you aren’t really paying attention, you won’t be able to identify what it is about a concept or idea that you don’t understand, and therefore won’t be able to struggle to understand it. You might, in fact, not realize that you don’t understand something. Finally, many people don’t realize that standardized tests explicitly measure your ability to pay attention. When you read a question that says “which of the below answers is not correct?” You may need to know algebra to correctly answer the question, but if you aren’t paying close attention, you might pick A), because it is the answer to the equation. Unfortunately, you would be answering incorrectly, because the question is asking for what is NOT correct. At the end of the day, if you compare the straight A student with a 4.0 GPA to the straight B student with a 3.0 GPA, or the high school student that scored a 31 on the ACT to his friend that scored a 27, you might just find that the ability and commitment to pay attention is the only real differentiator. LOI Student Achieves University Level English in 1 Month

LOI Student Achieves University Level English in 1 Month LOI student Moira Urenda achieved university level English in 1 month.Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of offering a one month intensive English scholarship to a group of 5 Bolivian students  through our new Academic English Program that weve created in partnership with AUPP.We would like to thank the people of iTEP, creators of a great English proficiency test that is being accepted by more universities every month. They were kind enough to provide us with testing before the intensive month of online English study began and a follow up test to measure  the results and effectiveness of our English classes.The students had 1 hour of live classes 5 days a week and were required to study independently on the integrated work 1 to 2 more hours a day. During this time the students raised their English level by 1 point on the iTEP which is the equivalent of raising from A1 to A2 in CEFR.We had one student raise her score from the equivalent of a 42 TOEFL score to an 88 TOEFL score. Th is is incredible! In 1 month of studying English with LOI she made huge improvements. While a score of 42 would not allow you into any major U.S. universities, an 88 will get you into almost all of them.Obviously she worked hard for this score and took her studies seriously.
